Softball Home Opener

Yesterday the Oregon State softball team opened up home play against the Aggies of Utah. I threw a few photos up on my blog that you can check out here.

Pac-10 Wrestling Championships

Over the weekend I photographed the Pac-10 wrestling Championships for the Pac-10. A few of the photos ended up on the conference website after and during the event and I posted a few more photos on my blog.

My Favorites of 2010

Since everyone and their dog seem to be posting a “best of” gallery I figured that I should also post a few of my favorite photos from 2010 as well (There may be additions to this post in the coming days because I always forget about a cool photo or two) I have never covered more events in one year before and I hope that continues into 2011.

Cyclocross Nationals 2010

Before my break even began I signed myself up for 4 days of shooting in extreme cold and standing around in mud. The USA cycling nationals were in Bend again this year and Pat Malach of Oregon Cycling Action asked me if I could shoot the races for him. This is the first time I have ever had a pass of any kind for a cycling event.

Civil War 2010

I looked at my WordPress blog for the first time in a very long time I thought, “better late than never” when I decided to post these photos. Thinking back on the game it was a mix of extreme fun and crushing disappointment, oh well. Since we had ESPN GameDay on location (and I was living on a friend’s couch and didn’t feel like going back to their house for just a couple of hours of sleep) I stayed up all night enjoying the Civil War atmosphere.

Battle In Seattle

This past weekend I took a trip with a friend of mine up to Seattle for the Western Oregon Wolves football game. The last time I was in Seattle I went with the OSU track team and missed out on getting to wander around the city because I was with the team and had to follow their schedule (I hate leaving others in charge of when and where I have to be.) So it was nice to get away from Corvallis for a few days and relax, not to mention that I got a chance to shoot a game at Qwest Field which could be the coolest stadium I have shot in yet!

An Off Day

Last Saturday’s football game against Arizona State was one of the most depressing days of shooting in recent memory. It seemed as though everything that could go wrong did. Somehow there did end up being a silver lining over what was in my opinion a dark day of shooting.

Orange And Black And Blue

wordpress_boise11

Blue uniforms on a blue field with the stadium filled with fans covered in blue made for a very challenging night. I am colorblind and I think because of this I had a difficult time following the action on the field (or I am just looking for an excuse for so so photos).

Oregon State Gets A Win Over Louisville

Football is finally back in my life after yesterday’s game against Louisville. The last two football games that I have covered were the Civil War and the Las Vegas Bowl last year and both were a little disappointing so I (and the rest of Beaver Nation) hoped that this weekend would end the Beavers mini losing streak.

Summer Baseball

There is no other sport that says summer more then baseball. For the past two summers I have photographed the Bend Elks, a collegiate summer baseball team. The Elks are part of the West Coast League which is a summer baseball league that allows collegiate players to play while school is out.

Sisters, Oregon at 12pm. No wait, I meant 12am.

There was a full moon a few nights ago and I started to wonder what kind of photos I could take at night with it. The first photo was really more of an accident but I happened to choose a pretty good white balance setting and then I left the shutter open for 86 seconds. I looked at the photo and thought, “Dang, I screwed up” but a lot of my friends like the photo. So then I went out and took the second photo last night.

First cycling photos of the year

The USA cycling U-23 national championships were in Bend this year. Today I went to the criterium race and took a few images. For those that do not what a criterium is, it’s a race around a short city course (usually about a mile or less in length) and the cyclists race for predetermined time or complete a set number of laps. First one across the finish line on the last lap wins. I love these because the racers are so close the crowds. Anyway here are a few of my favorite images from the day.

The eventual winner of the race, Ben King racing for Trek-Livestrong

Civil War Baseball

The #15 Oregon Ducks took on the unranked Oregon State Beavers this past weekend in what would be one of the best series of the year. I honestly thought that Oregon State had no chance of winning based on how they did against Oregon 11 days before, where they lost 9-4 during a non-conference game.

Instead the Beavers took down the Ducks winning all three games and making every one of them a nail-biter.

Spring Football: Post #2 Spring Game!

All the spring practices have come down to the final game before fall and I have a pretty big post about the whole game. Don’t expect a play-by-play though, just a ton of photos. I ended up with (what I considered to be a lot) of keep-able photos and even after filtering out the ones that I didn’t like all that much I still had a record (my own personal record) number of photos for a blog post. I hope you enjoy!

Oregon State Track

For the second time in 2 weeks I was ditched and left to drive on my own to some Oregon State sporting events. That doesn’t really bother me, it just gets a little boring driving places on your own. On Friday night I went down to Eugene for the Oregon Relays to shoot OSU.

Spring Practice: Post #1

Its spring and for me that means, well a lot,  but one thing that does take up some time is football practice. 3 days a week here in Corvallis I am over at the practice fields or in Reser Stadium taking photos. Here are some of the photos I have come up with in the past few weeks.

New Camera

So I got a used 1D mark III in mint condition and was able to use it the first few hours that I had it. Wow, what an amazing camera. Within a few minutes of using it I felt like I had been using it forever because the settings and menus are basically the same on the 7D. The colors sharpness of the photos were also great right from the start, it took a little while to get my 7D looking that good. Anyway here is my favorite photo from the 3 hours I used it last night.

Winterhawks Round 2

A few weeks back I was asked to shoot the Winterhawks game in Portland because the team wanted to see if my photos would be better in the Rose Garden compared to the Memorial Coliseum. But I had already committed myself to going to Seattle with the OSU track team. As spring break ended I thought well maybe I will ask if I could shoot one of the playoff games to make up for not being able to earlier, it worked!

Last Chance Qualifier

One day while sitting in my apartment I received a text from one of the SIDs at OSU(my bosses) asking if I wanted to go with the track team to Seattle, Of Course! That sounded great until I heard the stories of how dark it was inside the stadium they would be competing in. I have not taken photos in a stadium that dark since high school. (more…)

A New Angle

On Friday I shot the 5th home gymnastics meet of the 2010 season for Oregon State. Since the routines do not change very much I was looking for something new that no one has seen at OSU this year. While checking the USA Gymnastics website to see if they were still using my photos  saw some cool shots from overhead. I thought, “I could do that” and after talking to the right people I was able to try my Idea.

And some other shots from the night

Here is how the photo looked on the website that night

Which also lead to my first photo on the NCAA website

OSU Recruiting Dinner

I was asked if I could cover Oregon State’s annual recruiting dinner. Of course, I like photographing new things. The dinner was last night at the Oregon Convention Center in Portland. The lighting for the event was very dark but there were some cool projections on the walls that were good for photos. Here are a few from last night…

2010 Pink Out

Oregon State held its annual Pink Out gymnastics meet on Friday night and I broke down a purchased the 50mm f1.8 new for $100. I was pleasantly surprised by the photos that it turned out.

The Weekend at OSU

This weekend OSU hosted 2 men’s basketball games and a wrestling meet. Sounds like just another day at the office to me.

The weekend started off great with a win over the Arizona Wildcats on Thursday.

Then wrestling on Friday.

And Saturday ended with a loss to Arizona State.
